Cape Verde: The Construction Project of a Civilization in Mindelo (1803-1838)
Eduardo Adilson Camilo Pereira, PhD
Abstract
This research analyzes the various political speeches produced and reproduced by the political elites in Cape
Verde, about what island would host the capital of the archipelago. It also aims to analyze the speeches and
projects around the construction of Mindelo, and how the city itself was projected as a symbol of the progress and
the future of Cape Verde. It also proposes to analyze and understand the political and economic arguments to
justify the government headquarters’ transfer to Mindelo, taking into consideration the geographic centrality, the
foreign trade and the existence of safe harbor for navigation.
