Diversity Education, Practicum Experience for Preservice Teachers
Jeffery Cherry
Abstract
Between 1995 and 2005, the minority population in American public schools increased by almost 1,000,000
students and 8% of the total student population. By the year 2023, minority students are projected to account for
more than 55% of the public school total populous within the United States. This upsurge of minority students
has raised concerns with researchers and teacher educators about efficaciously preparing preservice teachers
while increasing teacher retention. Education professionals and researchers suggest participation in a diverse
practicum experience as a viable solution to address this concern. This research paper investigates the effects of
preservice teacher’s participation in practicum experiences, diversity education, and cultural immersion. It also
provides statistical data in regards to student and teacher demographics with the U.S public schools.
