An Examination of Existing and Necessary Qualifications of Practitioners Providing Supervised Visitation / Parenting Time Services
Tracy A. Marschall
Abstract
While progress has been made in terms of standardizing expectations for supervised visitation services and
increasing understanding about the benefits such services can provide to high conflict families, there is little
agreement over what constitutes adequate preparation and training or essential skills/knowledge. This article will
summarize the existing research regarding qualifications of practitioners providing supervised visitation /
parenting time services; discuss relevant skills and the possible consequences faced by practitioners and clients
without clear guidelines and expectations; and suggest areas in need of exploration. It is anticipated this analysis
will present important results to inform policy decisions / legislation, and improve service delivery for vulnerable
children and families.
